My name is Tanya Donahue, I am a KFP (Kreyol for Parents) committee member and Project correspondent, I have recently written an inter-racial Children’s book “The Hooligans Have Landed”. This book seeks to provide families with the resources to expose their children to the reality of inter-racial adoptive families as being natural families.

Part of this exciting project is the fact that 100% of the first years proceeds are being donated to organizations working to re-build Haiti and as such “Kreyol for Parents/Haiti” has been selected as one of the  recipients! To date, we have placed ten (10) of our twelve (12) families in homes. Eight homes were rented for two years for each family and for two families we paid the costs to repair their homes.  They received financial assistance ranging from $500 to $1000…”

As of today, 5 families now have housing and financial assistance. One family has had house repaired.

Happy, Fedette, bio mom to Jean Valdes (Samuel) and Nadège (Yloïse), holds her two year rental contract. In total she received $2,800 for rent and $800 for assistance for school for her two other children.

Mario, bio father to Douby holding his document showing he received $3,700 to repair his home. He was so happy.

Comparing Haiti and Chile: 9.0 on the Poverty Scale

Though Chile’s earthquake was 500 times more powerful than the one that hit Haiti, Chile was better prepared because of better building codes and infrastructure. Guest columnist Richard Stearns writes that Chile certainly needs support to recover, but Haiti’s recovery will take years of investment.

THE earthquake that struck Chile early Saturday morning was 500 times more powerful than the one that ravaged Haiti less than seven weeks earlier. Yet the difference in death tolls and damage is even more striking: More than 200,000 Haitians perished in a matter of minutes, while the body count in Chile likely will not exceed 1,000.

Many people are wondering why.

A number of organizations have been bringing in solar powered ovens to Haiti.  Acceptance is limited since the food may not be exactly the same and the learning how to use them properly is important to acceptance.

Using solar power to recharge cell phones and radios, etc is also very economical to a cash-strapped society.
